Steak Salad

Steak Salad

Tri-tip was on sale at the market a few weeks ago, but I was at a loss of how to cook it. I don't have a grill and every time I've attempted it on the stove it's turned out tough. Since it was so cheap I decided to take a leap and try it under the broiler and the results were amazing. It was nice and simple to put together too, which is always a bonus in the summer.

Steak Salad
serves two-three (or more) depending on the amount purchased; this is easy to modify for more people if needed
1lb tri-tip
sea salt + pepper
herbed goat cheese
1 egg
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1TBS olive oil
salad base of your choice

Turn the broiler on high. While the oven is preheating get to work prepping the steak. Amply rub both sides of the meat with the combination of salt and pepper (if you're partial to a spice rub that can be used as well) and place in a roasting pan. Cook for approximately 9 minutes (turning halfway through) or to a minimum internal temperature of 150° for medium rare/medium. The steaks I bought weren't large, but they were thick so adjust the cooking time as necessary being careful not to overcook the meat. After taking the meat out place it on a plate and cover it with foil to give it time to rest before cutting it.

While the meat is cooking prepare the goat cheese medallions. Whisk the egg in a small bowl and use another small bowl for the breadcrumbs. Slice the goat cheese into disks of a medium thickness. Coat amply with the egg and dredge through the bread crumbs. Using a small saute pan heat up the olive oil until it starts to shimmer. Pan fry each side until golden brown, taking care not to go too long or the cheese will melt out of the bread crumb barrier. Try to do this right before you eat so the cheese is still warm and somewhat melted when you go to eat.

Using the salad mix of your choice (in this case I used a bagged variety from Trader Joe's) cover a large place. Slice the meat as thinly as you can manage and lay across the lettuce. Garnish with the goat cheese medallions and enjoy!

On The Right Foot

1. gift box cake, 2. let it rain stars, 3. Awaiting Doors, 4. Walruses bento

Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to my weekly post where I will be sharing some of the flickr photos that inspire me, things I loved about the previous week, things I'm looking forward to, and some of my favorite links. Please feel free to join me either in comments or via your own blog, I would love to see what's inspiring you ❤

Blogathon 2009 | Now that I'm nice and rested I can look back at this weekend and declare the blogathon a success. Though I was tired (and starting to not feel well) I think this was the best year yet. I was able to raise $20 for First Book (and their link will be staying in the sidebar if you're interested in donating, but aren't able to right now) and I had a blast posting and talking to some awesome people. I would like to give special thanks to the site maintainers that made this year possible, my awesome monitor (and everyone who stopped by with a comment) for keeping me going, and an extra special thanks to Dave and Noelle for their donations. I already have some fun ideas brewing for next year.

Family Staycation | Both my mom and stepdad had the week off last week for the sole purpose of staying at home and relaxing around town. It was a blast hanging out, going shopping, spending hours with good books, watching movies, and trying some new spots of interest around town. Bliss.

Good Football | This weekend had quite a lot of hit. The two highlights for me were Seattle v. Chicago and AC Milan v. Inter Milan. Neither of my favorite teams pulled a victory, but both put on a fun match to watch.

Tasty Cupcakes | I plan on doing a full post on this, but I couldn't resist mentioning it in the meantime. Recently there was a post on Bakerella about Retro Bakery in Las Vegas. I don't live in that area of town and therefore hadn't seen it before so mom and I felt that a little drive was in order. It was so worth it. We both had the Milk & Cookies variety and it was simply amazing. I'm looking forward to sampling the Maple Bacon next (I am intrigued by the thought of bacon in a cupcake).

Things I'm Anticipating | getting my transcripts in so I can apply at the school district • new books to read and movies to see • making a dent in my new to-do list • ... and so much more!

And Now to Bed...

1. Scarlet Collection - Girl's Bedroom Collection, 2. Eve Collection - Girl's Bedroom Collection, 3. corner of bedroom, 4. bedroom

And here it ends. This year has been a blast, definitely the best so far! I am exhausted, but content and I would like to thank a few people before I slip off to bed. First of all, a hearty thank you to my sponsors. You guys are what made this endeavor worth the effort (and kept me going during those rough patches where all I wanted to do was give up and go to sleep). Another thank you goes out to the the main blogathon blog for the spotlight. Reading that gave me a burst of energy just when I needed it. Another huge thank you goes out to everyone who commented today, reading them kept me going all day. I hope you all had a fabulous blogathon experience this year, have an amazing sleep and sweet dreams!

And with that finished I am off to bed. Thank you all so much and I'll be back on Monday with my normally scheduled posting (or I hopefully will be, barring any lingering exhaustion). Goodnight!

Cloud Watching

1. Watching The Clouds, 2. singfest08 - day 1: watching clouds go by, 3. Cloud watching Daisies, 4. cloud watching

Cloud watching is one of my favorite activities for when I need to take a breath and relax. It's difficult to feel rushed while laying on my back in the moist grass, looking up at the blue sky. Though we don't have many overcast days here we often have fluffy white clouds dotting the sky. I'm content to simply watch them flit by in the wind. This is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset when those plain clouds become painted with a palette of shades ranging from the brightest of reds to the softest of purples. Pure bliss.

I purposely saved this post for this time as the sun is just now starting to illuminate the sky more and more. The clouds that are still hanging about look beautiful. Sweet sleep is so close, only half an hour more. At least this past half hour went by a little more quickly thanks to my kitty's antics.

Deco Nails

1. ***, 2. ★Polka Dot Nails and Bows★, 3. ***, 4. Sweets Deco Parts / Fruit Tips For Decorating Cell Phone, Nails, Strap, Sweets Clay Crafts and etc

Getting my nails done is one of my favorite indulgences. I love the feel of acrylic nails (and the tapping sound they make when I type). I love experimenting with different colors, I'm sporting hot pink at the moment. Recently though I discovered that I was only scratching the surface of decorative nails. There are endless varieties of charms and patterns one can try from the demure and girly to the vibrant and outrageous. I would love to teach myself how to be more creative with my designs. I am not even close to being ambidextrous so this will be a challenge.

With this I've been up a little over 24-hours. My energy is renewed slightly as the end is so close. I hope you're all holding up alright during this last hour.

Plushies

1. mini plush family 2, 2. Kayte Terry's softies for the Plush You! show, 3. plush you toys, 4. superbot plush & print

I have been a plushie fan ever since I was a young girl. At one point in time I had several hundred, from store purchases to gifts and prize winnings (I love midway games). These days my collection has been trimmed down to special favorites and new finds. These days I tend to collect the Sanrio mini-plushies both for their cuteness and their size (I can have more of them without having my room overrun).

Though buying plushies is fun, lately I've been learning how to make my own. My very first attempt came in elementary school with "Sammy the Salmon" (my names were never that original) made from spare shirt scraps. These days my medium is felt and my motifs tend to be food related. Currently I'm working on a strawberry cake.

Are you a plushie collector? How about any special childhood keepsakes?

Again with nothing new to report. I'm completely losing the ability to concentrate on things though I'm still awake. Almost there...

Song of the Half Hour: Lovebug - Jonas Brothers

Charms

1. PINK and NANA VINTAGE FLORAL CHARM BRACELET BY STELLA., 2. Hanging charm - Cherry blossom4, 3. Juicy Couture ballet shoe charm, 4. Lucky Cat Cellphone Charm

I am a big fan of charms, especially in the form of charm bracelets. Keeping a charm bracelet is such a personal experience with each charm representing a special memory or person. I was given my charm bracelet as a combined gift from my grandmother and aunts and it is one of my most treasured possessions. I've received charms as gifts that will forever remind me of those special people. I've also collected charms representing trips I've taken and personal symbols that I hold dear. I'm looking forward to continuing to add to the bracelet throughout my life so I can pass it on to future generations. I was the one to inherit my great grandmother's and when I hold it I feel such a special connection to her and her life. I hope one day my descendants can say that about mine.

Do you have any special charm-related memories?

I spent the past half hour sitting on my bed singing along to the songs playing on the computer as my back has officially rebelled against this chair. Despite some physical signs of tiredness I'm surprisingly alert. Thank goodness for spellcheck though, I have completely lost the ability to spell even simple words. Two more hours, the end is in sight!

Song of the Half Hour: I'm Coming - Rain

Video Games

1. Soft toy in Nintendo World, 2. My Nintendo DS, 3. Nintendo DS / Gadget Travel set - Matroyshka, 4. Video Games - QueBarato

While I'm not a hardcore gamer I am a fan of video games. I grew up playing an old school Nintendo (particularly Legend of Zelda and Mario). I still remember sneaking downstairs with mom in the middle of the night to play without waking up my grandparents. As I got older I expanded my collection of platforms, sticking mostly to Nintendo with the odd Sega system thrown in. I was still an avid LoZ player, but I also came to love the Pokemon series and miscellaneous RPG games. Even today my tastes still basically fall into those categories. My top favorite game remains LoZ: The Ocarina of Time while some of the games I'm currently playing include: Pokemon Diamond, Animal Crossing, Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, Princess Debut, Cooking Mama, FIFA Street, and FIFA World Cup. On weekends I can often be found playing a round of a multi-player with my stepdad ranging from Snowboard Kids 2 to Mario Party. One of these days I would love to try a Wii.

Are you into video games? If so, what are some of your favorites?

Nothing too exciting to report. I went and sat on the sofa for a little while just to change positions. Considering how late it is I'm actually doing pretty well. Only six posts to go including this one.

Song of the Half Hour: Get in the Game - The Rising Sound

Cork

1. cork board + back door, 2. Cork board, cork board on the wall, 3. Wine Cork, 4. Wine Cork Graveyard

As you can probably guess from the header here cork is one of my favorite textures. I love the rough and natural feel to it, as well as the shades of brown ranging from rich chocolate to buttery caramel. I am also a huge fan of wine corks (one of my favorite things in my room is the cork that came from the bottle of champagne on my 21st birthday). I'm loving the new trend of using corks to create bulletin boards and was ecstatic to find two at an amazing price (they can sort of be seen in this photo).

Thank you so much for the feature on the blogathon site! Now I'm awake and peppy again, at least for a little while. I had a brief scare with my internet going down for around ten minutes, but all seems to be in order now (hopefully it'll stay that way).

Song of the Half Hour: Suddenly I See - KT Tunstall

Antique Shops

1. Antique shop, Barcelona, Spain, 2. Antique Shop, 3. My favorite antique shop, 4. Patricks antique shop 2

Antiquing is another recent love of mine, inspired by the pages of Victoria and Somerset Life. I have always loved the history and story behind antiques, but now I'm learning to appreciate the hunt and the thrill of finding the perfect unexpected piece for a bargain. I tend towards books (especially school books, I love reading through old student notes - it's like a special window to the past), but I also love jewelry and furniture. Searching around town I've found some gorgeous shops, but my favorites are an hours drive away in Boulder City. I could spend days exploring the nooks and crannies of those shops. Have you ever been antiquing? Any fun stories to share?

I have reached the stage where my stubbornness has kicked in. This is a good thing, though I would still love a nap right about now... We're getting there!

Song of the Half Hour: Theme From Mortal Kombat - The Immortals

Beading

1. 86 Vintage Summer Sorbet Lucite, Flower and Glass Bead Mix, 2. Czech Glass Beads: Pinks, 3. Tiny Beaded Birthday Party Cuppycakes, 4. bead table

Beading is something I've been interested in for years, but have only recently gotten around to trying. My love of beads comes from my mom. As a little girl I could spend hours sorting through her array of colors and shapes. I loved the tiny and colorful seed beads best. Now I collect beads wherever I can. The variety available is astounding as is the history and culture behind many of the styles. Right now I work predominantly with bracelets, but I'm working to learn more and expand my repertoire.

Including this post there are only nine to go, we're definitely getting there. This is the hard part though, I can't seem to focus on much of anything right now. I think I'll get up and stretch for a little while to see if that helps.

Song of the Half Hour: Cellogic - 김영민

Baby Animals

1. baby bunny, 2. Posing mallard duckling, 3. Kittens (pp12), 4. go puppies go

Though I am a cat person I love pretty much every baby animal. In person I am a generally mellow person, but I can be reduced to cooing in mere seconds when confronted with a cute animal. As such I absolutely adore browsing the photos at Cute Overload. What are your favorite types of baby animal?

I am again so thankful for good television. Right now I'm watching an episode of my favorite design show, Color Splash, that I actually haven't seen before. I love the fanciful whimsy of children's rooms.

Bagpipes

1. bagpipe, 2. BagPipe Player II, 3. BagPipes, 4. Scottish Bagpipe Troupe

Writing about cellos earlier inspired me to write about my other favorite instrument, bagpipes. Bagpipe melodies range from jovial tunes that inspire dance to haunting refrains that evoke a melancholy atmosphere. I love them all. One day this is another instrument that I hope to play. Do you have a favorite bagpipe tune?

At the moment I'm watching a little television and that's keeping me alert for now. I'm thankful for HGTV's late night lineup on weekends (currently Dear Genevieve).

Cheese

1. Cheese shop (3), 2. my cheese shop, 3. Five-Cheese & Fresh Tomato, 4. Gruyère Cheese Gougères

I am an avid fan of cheese. I like cheese on just about everything from the sweet to the savory. My favorite varieties range between the sharp and bitter to the smooth and creamy. Because I am lacking the ability to coherently blog about cheese at the moment I will randomly list some of my favorite cheese dishes. Fontina as a topping on everything from burgers to naan. Gruyère gnocchi. Greek salad dotted generously with Feta. Macaroni and cheese made with Aged White Cheddar. A slice of Havarti on a turkey sandwich. Gouda both paired with fruits and on pizza. Fresh Mozzarella mixed with pasta. ... and so much more!

What are your favorite cheeses and cheese dishes?

Once the midnight threshold is passed I tend to get a little loopier than usual so I apologize in advance if my writing stops making sense at some point. How are you guys holding up?

Song of the Half Hour: Chess for Two (兩個人的西洋棋) - 183 Club

Sea Shells

1. Sea shells, 2. Sea shells, 3. sea shells, 4. Sea Shells on the sea shore

Growing up in a sea side town has given me a life long love of shells. Collecting them is actually on of my favorite beach activities (I absolutely will not go beyond calf deep in water I can't see through so swimming on the California coastline is pretty much out for me). I love coming through the sand, seeing tiny corners peeking out while the wet sand squishes deliciously between my toes. It's like a magical treasure hunt where the jewels are instead tiny delicate shells in an impossible number of colors and varieties. I keep a small box of my treasures and I love looking at it and allowing those tactile memories to flood back.

What are your favorite beach-side activities?

Hazelnut coffee is delicious. Unfortunately caffeine has no effect on me, but the flavor is a nice change. SIX MORE HOURS!! And so the home stretch begins...

Cello Music

1. cello, 2. My Cello at the Cathedral, 3. Cello, 4. Cello III

I am a big fan of classical music and my favorite instrument is definitely the cello. Its rich melodies are like dark chocolate for the ears. My love affair with this beautiful instrument started in eighth grade. It was my first year in orchestra and I played the double bass. Seated as I was behind the cellos I had my first up close introduction to that beautiful sound. One of these days I want to purchase one of my very own and teach myself to play. Until then I will delight in any cello music I can find.

Do you have a favorite orchestral (or other for that matter) instrument?

Music is definitely getting me through this lull. Two years ago during my fist blogathon someone told me that getting up and dancing/jumping was the best way to wake up again and that has definitely proven true for me.

Song of the Half Hour: Zero Gravity - David Archuleta

Curling Up with a Good Book

1. Reads the Books, 2. Vintage Ladybird Books 'Read and Write' (Peter and Jane), 3. Reading book against sun, 4. reading

Books are one of my favorite topics to talk about. They take up a good majority of my free time and I'm absolutely fascinated with the reading habits of other people. Personally I read across the genres from the classics to fantasy to chick lit to YA to children's picture books to non-fiction on a range of topics. I'll try just about everything once, though I do have my preferences. For me to truly get into a book I need a strong female character that I can identify with. I love quirky side characters that pop up and stick around. I love a little romance (though generally only if the relationship isn't the only focus of the novel). I adore happy endings and positive messages. Along those lines, some of my favorites (this is not an inclusive list because it's late and I know I'll forget some):

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle | This has been my favorite book since I first read it in second grade and it will always remain my top favorite. This is my comfort book, whenever I'm having a bad day I can open up to any passage in this book and immediately feel better. I have my mom's copy from when she was a little girl and that alone is enough to make me smile. I adore the worn pages and vintage scent.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen | I love all of her books, but this is the one that stuck with me the most. I identified so deeply with the character Eleanor which plays a big part in my love of this book.

The Tortall Series by Tamora Pierce | This is fresh in my mind as I am in the process of re-reading it after just having read the newest installment, Bloodhound. I love this whole universe that she's created and the characters that inhabit it. I love her concepts of knights and magic and that strong female characters are the backbones of the narratives. Not to mention the amazing side characters who are just as vivid as the main ones. Reading these books is like being transported into their world.

The Maggie Quinn Series by Rosemary Clement-Moore | I love this series and it is quickly becoming one of the most re-read series in my personal library. Maggie is such a fantastic main character. She's witty, caring, loyal, and intelligent. She has realistic emotions and an unbending spirit. Not to mention the engaging plots filled with mystery and fantasy. The author has a new book (diverging from this series) coming out soon and I can't wait to give that a try too.

Nancy Drew | She was my idol growing up. I loved that she was feminine, yet still intelligent and skilled in pretty much everything (traits that can be mutually exclusive). This series sparked my life long love for mysteries and will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus they're still a blast to re-read.

There are so many more that I could mention (from Harry Potter to Twilight to some of my favorite cozy mysteries), but I could ramble all night. At some point I'd like to do a series here on what I'm reading... What are some of your favorites? What are you reading right now?

I just realized that it's a little past the time to post, I didn't realize that I was going to write quite this much. This has been one of my favorites to write up so far though.

Bird Cages

1. bird cage, 2. bird cage, 3. The Bird Cage, 4. bird cage buttons

Bird cages are one of my favorite design motifs and decor objects. I love the delicate lines of the metal combined with the strength of being functional and the never-ending array of designs (though my favorites are decidedly of the antique variety). I love the symbolism of an open bird cage and it is an image I use a lot in my life. In fact, I'm currently working on a sketch to make that my blog/brand logo (in the company of some of my other favorite things).

I'm also in the process of restoring/revamping a couple of older bird cages given to me by my grandma. She was going to throw them out when she moved, but I couldn't let such beauties go to waste like that. They need a little TLC, but I can't wait until I can get them cleaned up and on display.

What are some of your favorite design motifs?

That wasn't the most productive half hour ever, but I seem to be getting another wind so that's something to be happy about. I think singing and dancing around will be in order soon.

Song of the Half Hour: The Look - Roxette

Summer Storms

1. Umbrella HBW, 2. Cannaregio Rain, Venice II, 3. Rain Boots!, 4. December Rain on State Street

When I planned this prompt I had no idea how applicable it would be. Normally during the summer there is nary a cloud in sight, but this last week it's been a different story. At least once a day there's been a brief rainstorm followed by a few hours of thunder and lightning. This is absolutely one of my favorite things, it's the perfect weather for curling up with a good book and relishing the sounds of the storm. Storms also remind me of being a little girl, sitting on the driveway in a plastic chair and watching the lightning with my uncle. What's your favorite type of summer weather?

I spent the last half hour watching random Big Bang videos on youtube with mom, so that was fun (though I'm running a little behind as a result). I wonder what I'll get up to now that everyone is heading to bed.

Song of the Half Hour: Se7olution - Se7en

Afternoon Tea

1. {tea and muffins}, 2. new year's tea, 3. Tea Cozy, 4. a Cup of Tea and a Slice of Cake, please***

Afternoon tea is one of my favorite daily rituals. From extravagant hotels to a small mug as a respite from a busy day and everything in between, I love it all. Life has the tendency to get so hectic that taking a moment to have quiet and a comforting beverage goes a long way in restoring my energy and spirits. Tea snacks themselves are also pretty fabulous from tiny cakes to savory finger sandwiches (I'm partial to cucumber or egg personally). As for what tea varieties I like, it varies by my mood. When I need to relax and take a breath green tea is my best bet, but when I need to be re-energized I prefer a hearty Irish breakfast or a spicy ginger variety. What are your tea preferences?

I'm feeling a little loopy over here (I've been fighting back a cold this past week and I think it's catching up with me). I have no plans to stop though, last year I made it through while pretty much delirious with fever so a little cold isn't going to stop me.

Song of the Half Hour: 오, 아, 오 - Big Bang

Colorful Scarves

1. Violon Melancolique - Casol square silk scarf - Carré Foulard soie, 2. Fabric Scarf Holder, 3. Scarf, 4. [MCCALL'S MAGAZINE COVER, WOMAN WEARING SCARF]

As with hair accessories, colorful scarves are some of my favorite fashion accents. While I love fuzzy knit scarves, this post is going to focus on summer accents. My favorite in this category would have to be the beautiful printed silk ones that my mom has had since I was a young girl. I love to use those as head scarves and neckerchiefs depending on the length and print. Lately I've also been loving the long, light cotton choices from shops like H&M (and at those prices, who can resist?). For me color is still key in my scarf choice, for summer teal and hot pink have been my shades of choice. Are you a scarf person? What's your favorite way to wear a scarf?

Hanging out with my mom and a big glass of iced tea. What could be better?

Song of the Half Hour: If I Never See Your Face Again - Maroon 5

Gardens

1. Stourhead Gardens., 2. A First Glimpse of the Gardens at Penshurst Place, 3. Leading You Down the Garden Path at Great Dixter!, 4. Hanging Gardens

I love taking that first step into a well tended (or wildly unkempt) garden. Having lived in the desert for so long that moment is like being transported into another world. It's a delight for all the senses from the scents of fresh blooms and cut grass and the sound of the little birds that tend to inhabit gardens of all sorts. My favorite gardens can be found around the world: the botanical gardens of Santa Barbara (my hometown and one of my favorite places to visit), the gardens located all around the city of Bath (some of my favorite photos from my trip to Englad came from those gardens), and the local Springs Preserve (which has really helped me come to appreciate the desert's landscape more and more).

I am now in possession of my tea and a surprise container of frozen yogurt. Bliss.

Steampunk

1. Steampunk brass wire ring - Genuine Baltic Amber - 8 , 2. The Witch, 3. Instructions de machine SteamPunk, 4. Steampunk Makers at the Contraptors Lounge Maker Faire May 4 2008 l

Steampunk is something I was introduced to by a friend a little over a year ago and I remain absolutely fascinated. I am completely in love with the aesthetic, particularly the clothing styles. For those not familiar with the term:
Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality. - Wikipedia

For some examples of the genre that you might be familiar with (as well as some of my favorites: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Treasure Planet to name a few. Do you have a particular favorite in the Steampunk genre?

I wish I could find my copy of Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but it's gone missing. A shame too as it would be fun to watch about now. I'm still watching the match which continues to be good (putting the commentary aside). I also have a Japanese Cherry Green Tea and a Hazelnut Blended Coffee on the way. I am a happy camper.

Polka Dots

1. Bella Earrings in Teacher's Pet, 2. P is for Polka Dot, 3. polka dots 2 sides shoulderbag, 4. Project.

I alluded to this in an earlier post, but polka dots are by far my favorite design motif. I use polka dot prints for everything from clothing to accessories to home decor to web design. I love it all. Do you have a favorite print that you keep returning to?

One of my shorter posts, but I've been up stretching this past half hour. I'm feeling much more awake for it though so it was worth it. Time for my first tea/coffee run of the day (I'm surprised I made it this long...).

Ice Cream

1. coffee ice cream, 2. mint ice cream, 3. Raspberry Ice Cream Cone, 4. Ice Cream Cone Cup Cakes

Yet another foodie post (writing these always makes me so hungry). I can't do a series about my favorite things about summer without bringing up ice cream. It's the perfect summer treat to cool down with on a hot afternoon and there are so many varieties that everyone can find something they might like. From the ice pops brought by the ice cream man to creamy soft serve loaded with gourmet toppings and everything in between. Honestly I was never a big fan of the ice cream man as a child, my heart always did, and still remains with, soft serve. I love it in just about any incarnation, but my favorite is the classic chocolate dipped cone. Lately though I've started to develop an interest in making my own ice cream (though a little more sophisticated than the vanilla we made in coffee tins for chemistry class). I checked out A Passion for Ice Cream from the library and I'm filled with all sorts of inspiration. In addition to the ice cream itself I also love the cones they come in, I would love to attempt ice cream cone cupcakes at some point.

So, what is your favorite type of ice cream? Any special memories related to this sweet treat?

The match just went to half time and is tied at one. There have been quite a few exciting plays, but I would be enjoying it more if the commentators would focus more on the game and less on off the pitch drama.

Fairytales

1. Fairytale Silhouettes!, 2. Snow White - Dream Along with Mickey, 3. Fairytale Castle, 4. Disney - Cinderella Castle Mosaic Selective Coloring

My history with fairytales started much the same as many other little girls from my generation, through Disney. Thinking back I can't recall if The Little Mermaid or Snow White was my first, but I loved them just the same. I grew up watching all of the Disney princess movies I could get my hands on, with Beauty and the Beast remaining my personal favorite. Fast forward to seventh grade where I had my first encounter with the Grimm versions of classic fairytales through my literature comparison course and I had my perspective completely changed. There was a different side of fairytales that I hadn't seen before, a darker side. This immediately piqued my interest retellings. How many different versions of these stories were there? Where, how, and why did they originate? This was actually a focus in my children's literature course in college (my specialization in the library field). I still love to read any version I can get my hands on, from modern to classic. Some of my personal favorites include Ella Enchanted and those written by Robin McKinley. Honestly, I love fantasy in general. What are your favorite fairytales or fantasy novels? Do you have a particular favorite version?

Writing this post has me wanting to pick up a book... I think I might do that once this match is over.

Fairy Lights + Lanterns

1. Lantern, 2. bedroom, 3. Fairy lights, 4. Pretty Paper Lanterns

As the day starts to wind down it is just the time to turn on fairy lights and lanterns. I have these scattered about and I love the warm, ambient glow that they provide. They add just a little magic to every room, something special and out of the ordinary. One of these days I would love to create a canopy for my bed of tulle and fairy lights, something fanciful and fun. In addition to their indoor uses fairy lights and lanterns can add a spark to an outdoor space. One of my favorite summer pastimes is surrounding myself with fairy lights out on the patio with a good book. What are some of your favorite ways of lighting your space?

Halfway there! Compared to the previous two years things are going by a little slowly (I'm amazed we're only halfway through), but I've been having an awesome time so far and can't wait to see what the second half holds. I did just get some good news, my library holds are in and there's another football match on ESPN2 (LA v. Kansas City). What are you up to at this glorious halfway point?

Hair Accessories

1. Anna Posy Garland Headband , 2. Cherry POP Headband, 3. Headband detail, 4. New Feather Headbands!

This ties in with my post on personal style, but as hair accessories are a key part of my wardrobe I thought they deserved a post of their own. Hair accessories were key for me from a young age. I remember as a little girl sitting on the stool in my grandma's bathroom as she would put my hair in twin braids with a variety of different clips (my favorites were of little poodles). Then there were the ribbons she would weave into my styles or the giant head bows that I would wear. Then as I got older I opted more often for a ponytail or bun, to keep my hair off of my face and nothing else. All of this changed last November when I cut my hair to an asymmetrical chin-length cut (my hair was down to my waist at this point) the made it impossible to pull my hair back. Now I have amassed quite the collection of headbands (I'm particularly partial to large side-bows or flowers) and cute barrettes. How do you wear your hair? Have you ever made a drastic change that made you reevaluate the way you style it?

Munching on a slice of BBQ pizza and working on some miscellaneous layout stuff I'm feeling a lot more productive. Hopefully that feeling will stick around.

Time in the Kitchen

1. My kitchen corner, 2. Home in the kitchen, 3. New Kitchen Set Up, 4. Kitchen

You've probably been getting an idea from my posts today, but I love spending time in the kitchen. I love developing new recipes, both sweet and savory. While I did bake in the kitchen with my grandma as a young girl my passion for it didn't develop until a few years ago. After graduating high school my college schedule finished up in the early afternoon while my mom and stepdad both worked late. Since I was (and am) living at home I wanted to do something to help so I took over cooking duties. I've since cooked dinner every night. I'm honestly amazed at how far I've come. I started out terrified of raw meat (I was raised to overcook everything to avoid food poisoning) and have since come to appreciate the many ways of cooking it (I would never order a steak above medium/medium rare now). I had no clue how to prepare fresh vegetable and most of my sides and baked goods came from a box. Now I eat things that I had never would have dreamed and I'm always excited to something. I've had so many people ask me how I've gotten to this point and I do have a few tips: Frequent practice is key! Read as many cookbooks and recipe blogs as you can find and try all sorts of new things. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Step outside of your comfort zone from time to time.

What are some kitchen-related memories you have? Any favorite recipes?

I'm perky and back on the ball again after a nice snack. I am wishing that my laptop's internet was working though, this chair is getting a little uncomfortable.

Lemonade

1. Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade, 2. Lemonade, 3. strawberry lemonade, 4. If Life Gives You A Lemon , Make Lemonade

Lemonade is one of my favorite treats during the summer. There's nothing quite as refreshing as a glass full of lemonade on a hot summer afternoon. As to types of lemonade, I'm not particularly picky. I love the bitter sweetness of raspberry and strawberry varieties (here is my recipe for strawberry lemonade), and classic lemonade is a quintessential summer refreshment reminding me of the days of lemonade stands and summer play dates spent with good friends. My favorite by far though is the effervescent elegance of sparkling French Berry Lemonade. I first tasted it years ago after a trip to Whole Foods and it has become a party staple ever since (it was even used in lieu of alcohol for my mom's wedding toast). What's your favorite type of lemonade?

Speaking of French Berry, I've just cracked my bottle open and it is bliss along with a big slice of tiramisu. How are you guys doing as we approach the halfway mark?

Inspiring Magazines

1. Victoria magazine, 2. Brown Paper Packages, 3. artful blogging article 3, 4. martha stewart living, april '09

Magazines and their glossy pictures have been an inspiration to me as long as I remember. I have clippings dating back to elementary school that I'm working on incorporating into inspiration books and it's been a blast to sort through so far. I have four particular favorites:

Victoria I've read this publication since I was a little girl and my mom would subscribe. Years ago they stopped publishing, but recently they came back with Bliss tacked onto the name and a renewed spirit. I love everything about this magazine from the gorgeous photography to the articles on all things beautiful from gardening to art to style.

Somerset Life I came across this a couple of years ago and it has since become my personal favorite. The theme of the publication is finding ways to beautify everyday life from dressing up office supplies to little ways to surprise others. This is a personal mission of mine so I really connect with it. The inspiring projects and photography only fuel my love for this beautiful publication.

Artful Blogging It will come as no surprise that I love blogs. I love reading them. I love writing them. I love the community surrounding them. This is the magazine that inspired me to start blogging in the public sphere again. It's also introduced me to some of my favorite bloggers.

Martha Stewart Living It was a happy accident that led me to subscribing to this. My points on a survey site were running out and this was the only prize I was interested in and I'm so glad it was. The amount of inspiration I find each month from this magazine is amazing. From projects to recipes I have so many new things to try!

What are your favorite magazines? Any old favorites that have since been discontinued?

I'm running a little late with this one so I'll keep this short. I was hanging out with mom for a change of scenery and I lost track of time...

Personal Style

1. rva project 19., 2. Cute Dresses at DelilaH in Shibuya, 3. poodle dots, 4. Rustic Country Dress

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by clothes. From finding quirky ways to put outfits together to learning the history behind a certain type of garment to learning how to make my own. I love fashion-related shows like Project Runway and lately I've found myself spending hours going through fashion books (especially period pieces). My personal style is a huge mix ranging from classic lines to edgy prints to cute lolita details. I am drawn to bold black&white and colors both of the vibrant and pastel varieties. I would definitely my personal style as quirky romantic. I adore throwing in fun accessories and trying new things with my hair and makeup. I am fair at sewing/knitting/beadwork, but now my goal is to improve my skills so I can create a wardrobe uniquely my own. What's your personal style? Are there any pieces or styles that you find yourself typically drawn to?

I've been kind of spacey this past half hour, but I feel mentally refreshed. It's like my brain took a mental nap while I was still awake. Odd, but nifty. I think I might open up my bottle of French Berry Lemonade soon, it's getting warm and that sounds refreshing.

Swimming Pools

1. Swimming Pool of Amari Trang Beach Resort, Thailand, 2. Swimming Pool - Pileta, 3. Hotel swimming pool, 4. Swimming Pool

If you've seen me around twitter at all these past few months you know that swimming has been my activity of choice. I'm lucky in the the condo complex I live in has a swimming pool directly across from my condo so going swimming in a mere walk away. It's almost never crowded, especially at night, making it the perfect place to allow the day's worries to melt away. My favorite time to swim is definitely after the sun's gone down. It keeps the heat down and there's something magical about looking up at the moon and stars while floating in water that's still deliciously warm from the rays of the sun. What's your favorite summer activity for relaxation?

So much for organization... I ended up spending the last half hour catching up with comments (how I wish blogger would introduce comment threading for giving proper replies) and commenting around Poupee Girl. Not so productive, but certainly fun.

Road Trips

1. USA Road Trip 2009 (50/365), 2. Road Trip, 3. What's a Road trip Without a Road, 4. polaroids: Texas road trip 2007

From a young age road trips were a favorite summer pastime of mine. They were a window to the world around me and they allowed me to see that world close-up. Some of my early memories include bus trips to Disneyland through my grandpa's job, a horribly memorable trip to the Grand Canyon (that I can at least look back on and laugh at now), and countless trips to visit relatives in Northern California. As a high school student road trips extended to include science trips to Magic Mountain, club trips for competition, and the amazing experience of Disneyland through the night for Grad*Nite 2005. Most recently a roadtrip meant a drive to Zion for a St. Patrick's Day festival in the rain. Every trip we somehow manage to get lost, but that just opens the road to new sights and adventures. Do you have any fun road trip memories?

With both the game and lunch over I am back to hanging out and listening to music. I think I might start organizing my bookmarks or something to keep my mind occupied. I would also like to thank everyone who's commented so far, your comments definitely help keep me going!

Cupcakes

1. Wedding Sample Cupcakes, 2. alice in wonderland cupcakes, 3. cupcakes, 4. Cupcake Pops

What's not to love about cupcakes? They're perfectly portioned bits of extravagant sweetness that are just as fun to make as they are to eat. From a decorating standpoint they are a lot less intimidating than a full sized cake (mistakes are easy to scrape off). There are so many options for decorating too, from beautifully minimal to intricately ornate. What are your favorite type of cupcakes, any particular favorites in design or taste?

I'm also loving all of the cupcake bakeries that have been popping up in recent years. My personal favorite thus far locally definitely has to be Retro Bakery. After seeing their feature on Bakerella I went out and tried their Milk & Cookies variety and am now hooked. Next up? Their slightly more adventurous Maple Bacon variety. Do you have a favorite local cupcakery?

Lunch was delish and I'm feeling refreshed. The match is just finishing up the end of stoppage time, but it's still tied at zero. Not that it hasn't been exciting, there have been some awesome saves from both sides.

Cute Kitties

1. The Spy Kitty!, 2. sleepy king and hello kitty, 3. Close-Up of Kitty Curled Up and Sleeping, 4. CP Kittens

Though I love all animals, I am a cat person without question. As a little girl everything I owed was covered in cats: notebooks, calendars, posters, plushies, shirts, etc. I collected cat figurines. I desperately wanted a cat of my own, but several in my family were allergic. When I was nineteen mom married a man who had a cat and so my love of cats only intensified. He's a large American Shorthair, black with white marks around the paws/stomach/a half-moustache and bright green eyes. He's not an affectionate cat, but that makes the moments when he wants to snuggle that much more precious. He hates cat toys, but loves to chase my robe tie and various other pieces of string (and my hand when I'm feeling brave). My love of cat motifs continues to persist as well, particularly with Sanrio or Maneki Neko designs.

Do you have a feline friend (I'm a sucker for cat stories)? A love of cute cat items perhaps?

Lunch is on its way *does a happy dance* Mom is treating me to a burger from Create (my favorite burger place). There is no song this half hour as I've been watching the game (red cards to both Chicago and Seattle, how will this change things I wonder...).

Friendship

1. Happy Friendship Day, 2. on friendship, 3. Peace Love Happiness Friends 63/365, 4. Cat friends

I think it goes without saying that friends are awesome. They are a shoulder to lean on during the hard times and someone to share joy with in the good times. They encourage us and share their warmth and generosity. Years ago my friendships were limited to only those who happened to physically cross my path in school or in my community, but through in internet I am proud to have friends from all over the world. I can't tell you how blessed I am to have met these wonderful people. It is through them that my sphere of awareness has been expanded exponentially. They've introduced me to so many wonderful things and cultures. I feel so connected, I have a community I belong to even when I don't have people to physically spend time with. After transferring to a college that required telecommuting it is these friendships that kept me from feeling alone. I only hope that I can give to them what they've given to me over these years. Friendship is an amazing thing. How has friendship impacted your life?

The match has just come to half time and it has been a good one so far. It's still tied at zero, but there have been some close calls (particularly from set pieces). I feel like Seattle has the advantage at this point. Also, the "Gummy Tummy Penguins" from Trader Joe's are delicious.

World Cup Football

1. Italy - 2006 World Cup Champions, 2. FIFA U-20 World Cup Photos #3, 3. 2006 World Cup, 4. A pause for the 2006 World Cup Frenzy :)

I am going to attempt to attempt to keep this short because I can ramble about football all day if I let myself (which is why I'm limit this to World Cup, if I started talking about club sport I wouldn't finish this near in time). I am starting to get World Cup fever, qualifiers are coming to a close and the rosters are being put together. I am so excited this time around, I know so much more about the sport and so many more of the players. How about you, are you getting excited? Any particular favorites? Personally who I root for depends on the match, but in general I love the style of Brazil and Spain, the heart of Italy and England, the new style of Portugal, and for patriotic purposes the USA. Player by player basis I have a few that I enjoy on just about every team so this should be an amazing tournament.

I'm actually watching football right now (Chicago v. Seattle on ESPN) so I'm more than a little distracted ❤

At the Library

1. New library, 2. Inside the Parliament Library, 3. Masonic Library Stacks, 4. Chişinău (Moldova) - National Library

It's no secret that libraries are one of my favorite places to spend time (I am a certified librarian afterall). I love that first moment of stepping through the doors of a library. The atmosphere hits you all at once from the stillness of the air to the heady scent of much loved volumes. Picking books from the shelves I can't help but wonder about the people who checked them out before. That is one thing I miss from the days before computerization, I love the list of patrons tucked into the front cover. Having your name printed neatly on that list felt like an initiation into a special club.

Beyond the books themselves I love all the library has to offer. The silence and solitude to spend time in study or simply getting lost in a treausured novel. Seeing children discover the joy of reading for the first time. The wide array of programs and cultural events offered. It's the perfect respite on any given day. What are your favorite library-related memories?

Unfortunately there wasn't much on television (right now I'm watching HSN on mute while listening to music - I love Heidi Daus jewelry). Hanging out with mom is fun though.

Summer Movies

1. Old Fashioned Movie Time Popcorn, 2. Valley Art movie theater - ticket booth, 3. Movie Theater Seating, 4. Movie theater

Summer is one of my favorite movie seasons (along with Christmas). It's the season of action blockbusters and fun children's movies, two of my favorite genres. This year has also been a good one for romantic comedies. With movies at such a premium in cost I'm unable to go as much as I used to, but that makes me treasure the experience even more. I love piling into the car as a family, leaving early to ensure good seats. Walking into the theater, shoes sticking to the remnants of spilled sodas as I make my way to the middle of the row with the bar in front allowing for maximum comfort. Watching the previews and making a mental note of what I want to see in the future. Finally, watching the movie and allowing myself to be completely caught up in the on screen action. Such fun on a hot summer afternoon. Have you seen anything that you've loved this summer?

I lost track of time there and started to write this a little late (at least this post flowed a little more quickly than some of the others). I think I might flip on the televsion and see what's on...

Fun Music

1. Balloon Fun // Siren Music Fest 2008, 2. Plum's New Headphones, 3. Dance In The Rain, 4. LEGO CD Cover Photo

This has been an underlying theme in my posts this morning, but music is a big enough part of my life that it deserves its own post. In this case I'll be talking about fun music: what I listen to when I want to dance, sing along, do physical activity, or just want to relax in a good mood. For me this ranges through genres and languages. What I've been listening to today gives a pretty good indication of what I consider fun. Pop music from many cultures (though predominantly USA, Korea, Japan, and China) mixed with hip hop, classic rock, and some light classical. Not to mention soundtracks. This is the kind of music that keeps me going on a tough day. In concert form these are the concerts that keep you on your feet, clapping to the beat and singing along. Where energy is high and you can't help but grin from ear to ear. As the day goes on you'll be seeing some more links to what I think of as fun music, but I'm curious. What is your fun music? What do you listen to that never fails to bring a smile to your face?

I've spent the last half hour working through some of my web dailies and grooving along. I'm definitely starting to crave lunch now though after seeing so many delicious food posts.

Song of the Half Hour: Fly with Me - Jonas Brothers

Betsey Johnson

1. Betsey Johnson's Apartment 5, 2. Viva la Betsey!, 3. Betsey Johnson, 4. Betsey Johnson Makeup Bag

This is a more recent love for me. I saw a piece of her jewelry on a blog a little over a year ago and I've been hooked ever since. I adore her charming and whimsical motifs (my favorite are definitely those related to tea). I love her use of vibrant colors and bold patterns. I especially love her use of polka dots. It's rare that I find a designer that really captures my aesthetic, but Betsey Johnson definitely fits that bill. I received my first piece from her line (a black and white floral bangle) a couple of weeks ago and I can't wait to add to the collection.

Talking about designers, who are your favorites?

Since I'm not likely to be doing anything interesting today I think I'll start sharing some of the music that I'm listening to. Each post I'll link the song I'm currently listening to via imeem: Sayaendou - NewS

Watercolors

1. watercolor box, 2. Watercolor Challenge: Spanish Park, 3. seeds, original watercolor, 4. Bamboo forest 竹 林 深 处0155 Watercolor

Watercolors are a medium that has always held my interest. From the days of kindergarten mixing colors at random and creating a general mess (the watery texture fascinated me at that age) to today attempting to create actual images (though I still have a long way to go). I love the dreamy and ethereal qualities that watercolor paintings have. The sheer amount of different effects that can be achieved. Lately I've been particularly inspired with nature motifs. Are you a fan of watercolors? Any particular favorite artists in the medium?

My mug of water is running low so I think it might be time to head to the kitchen. Staying hydrated is definitely key in staying awake for me.

Notebooks

1. Moleskine ... the legendary notebook of Van Gogh, Chatwin, Hemingway, Matisse and Céline~, 2. Bird perched upon my notebook, 3. 'Vintage Autumn' notebooks, 4. Pocketsize notebooks

It's no secret that I love notebooks. They're definitely one of my biggest shopping addictions, I can rarely leave a store without at least browsing the notebook section. I have dozens of them around my room (many have yet to find their purpose) for various uses. I have minis for to-do lists and to stash in my purse before leaving the condo. I have a hardcover beauty to use as a journal. I keep larger ones filled with lists of all sorts. I use large sketchbooks for keeping track of inspirations and I always have a small one by my computer for moments of inspiration. I love reading through pages of old notebooks, filled years ago. Even now I have an open notebook keeping track of what I've posted so far today. Are you a notebook fan?

Nothing new to report this time around beyond that I love the playlist that I've put together to listen to this year.

Cute Boutiques

1. Cute store, 2. mirror image at girly chic, 3. The Cupcake Boutique, 4. My favorite stationery shop so far-Art Box

When I go shopping presentation is important to me (this goes for both online and off). When the shop is presented in a cute or beautiful way I feel such a stronger pull to the products at hand. This is one of the things I love about personally owned shops. So much care and attention to detail is put into the design of the shop. You can feel the owners love and passion for their products immediately upon passing the threshold.

This has been a love of mine from a young age. I remember (and miss as both shops have since closed) the days of looking around in wonder in Christmas Goose and Ivy League. Looking at the pretty tea cups and delicate porcelain dolls. Breathing in the scents of butterscotch and roses. Hearing and savoring gentle piano melodies playing softly over the speakers. Feeling the rich velvets and fine laces. Tasting the sweet warmth of cocoa and creamy caramels that were sold in bins by the registers. Bliss. These days my tastes remain much the same. Some of my current favorites include Thyme in the Kitchen and Grimm's Gifts. What are some of your favorite shops, past or present?

With the sun streaming in through my window I am starting to become properly awake. Now that I've started to find my groove I'm feeling blissfully relaxed and cheerful.

Fresh Flowers

1. Pink Flowers On Fresh Cut Lawn, 2. fresh flowers, 3. flowers on my table, 4. Fresh Flowers at the Wedding

There is nothing quite like a bouquet of fresh flowers. They're a treat for the senses: beautiful to look at, soft to the touch, full of delightful scents, and in some cases delicious to eat. Having a vase on my desk never fails to make me smile. They remind me to slow down and take a deep breath. To stop and smell the roses.

There are so many varieties and colors available, it's mind boggling to think of them all. My personal favorites include cherry blossoms and peonies, but I truly do love them all. Each inspires a different mood, evokes a different emotion. Some act as a reminder for a special memory and others are simply just pretty to look at. I have been unable to find a local flower shop, but having fresh flowers in the house is always a special treat. What are your favorite flowers to have around?

I can't believe that we're already at the sixth post of the day! It seems like I just woke up a few minutes ago. I'm definitely having a blast so far though.

Carousels

1. Carousel..., 2. Carousel, 3. miniature carousel figures, 4. carousel

Carousels are a big part of my memories of being a little girl. I can still remember when one was put in the local mall. It was such a treat to make a special trip to ride one of the shining horses decked out in their finest. I would dress up in something that would allow me to twirl and feel like a princess. After all, riding those horses made me feel like royalty so why not look the part? What I would ride would vary. Would I choose the majestic black stallion, the delicate white mare, or something a little more fantastical (the sea horses were one of my favorites). Climbing onto the saddle was always accompanied by a trill of fear, but the rush of the breeze was always worth it. That carousel has since closed down, but carousels will always be a favorite for me at any carnival or amusement part. Do you have any fond carousel memories? A favorite type of horse perhaps?

I am feeling much better for having had breakfast (quiche and melon ❤). The groove is definitely starting to set in. Now maybe I'll be able to start visiting more blogs.

Iced Coffee

1. Iced Coffee on a Very Hot Day, 2. iced coffee, 3. What would we do with out coffee?, 4. Summer is for Iced Coffee

I am a big fan of iced coffee in the summer. The combination of sweet, bitter, and cold is bliss on a hot day (and certainly something I plan on partaking in later today). I'm not too particular when it comes to flavors, though caramel and hazelnut are what typically find their way into my cup. I recently started cold brewing coffee to keep on hand and it's made all the difference in the morning, especially with homemade caramel sauce mixed in. This recipe from Ina Garten is one of my favorites. How do you take your coffee, any personal favorite combination?

It's amazing how fast a half hour goes by in these early hours while as the day goes on I know they will stretch longer and longer (particularly post-midnight). I'm still working on finding my groove, how are you doing so far?

Photography

1. My Father's Camera, 2. cameras on credenza, 3. Kodak Brownie Starlet, 1957 - my first camera, 4. Dad's camera

Photography is a great love of mine. I love taking it and I love looking through the work of others. I remember my first camera. It was second grade and I had raised enough during a school fundraiser to qualify for a prize and as I was heading out for a month-long trip to Alaska that summer I chose the bright orange, brand-less camera. It was large in my small hands, a vibrant orange with black buttons and a lanyard wrist strap. I was awed to have it in my hands and even though the photos were always blurry I treasured each one of them. Those experiences sparked a lifelong love for me and even though that camera was sold at a long ago garage sale I will always remember those times. What were your first experiences with a camera?

Hmm... I should probably have breakfast soon (I have a quiche waiting for me in the freezer), but I'm still trying to get settled in a routine. I can't emphasize enough how thankful I am for music. Last year my computer couldn't handle iTunes. I don't know how I did this without it. Are you listening to anything this year to keep you going?
